Datwaun Catchings was a 22-year-old Black man who was fatally shot by a Maple Heights police officer in May, 2022. These photos were taken Oct. 22, 2022, at the National Day of Protest against Police Brutality rally and march in Maple Heights, OH. Family members of other stolen lives spoke to the protesters from Datwuan’s family members, Black Lives Matter and the October 22 Coalition against Police Brutality.
Following the shooting, the family filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Maple Heights and the officer involved, arguing that Datwuan posed no threat and challenging the circumstances of the shooting. The city eventually settled the lawsuit for $1.5 million.
